She says ethnic minorities face additional challenges when going through <strong>cancer<\/strong> treatment because of cultural <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a huge additional weight on Angel\u2019s shoulders to have to explain her condition and justify her decision to have chemotherapy, when so many <strong>people<\/strong> were telling her to \u2018leave it up to God.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I am a Christian, however, I believe that my relationship with God is personal and between myself and God,\u2019 explains Angel. \u2018Whatever I choose to do everyone else will have to understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Getting <strong>cancer<\/strong> is not your fault, it\u2019s not a punishment from God, and if you choose to undergo treatment and pray, that\u2019s perfectly fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Getting <strong>cancer<\/strong> is not your fault, it\u2019s not a punishment from God\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Having a <strong>cancer<\/strong> diagnosis following the already difficult <strong>year<\/strong> prior, meant that I had to find strength I didn\u2019t know I had. I got wide-eyed as I noticed a tweet that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greg_Gutfeld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Gutfeld<\/a> of Fox News had commented on with his usual inimitable humor, from a user named Aella, who was questioning why bestiality has historically been <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>. She very much seemed to indicate that it perhaps should not be.<\/p>\n<p>In Deuteronomy 30:15-16 God said, &#8220;See, I have set before thee this <strong>day<\/strong> <strong>life<\/strong> and good, and <strong>death<\/strong> and evil; In that I command thee this <strong>day<\/strong> to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.<\/p>\n<p>Both God&#8217;s commandments and the scientific realities he established were always for the benefit of his <strong>people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We seem to think that God just wants to restrict us, when what he really wants is the very best for us.<\/p>\n<p>However, for some <strong>people<\/strong>, the <strong>word<\/strong> is still a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>God could not be everywhere; hence he made such beautiful creatures like <strong>women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even male members of the family are supportive of this belief and the practice is on for decades, she said and added that the villagers rely on God to safeguard such <strong>women<\/strong> who are kept out of their homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m fascinated by the history of swearing and how our <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> have shifted over <strong>time<\/strong>,&#8221; says Countdown\u2019s resident <strong>word<\/strong> expert <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Susie_Dent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susie Dent<\/a>, &#8220;I talk about swearing a lot.<\/p>\n<p>In the Middle Ages, the biggest <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> was any profanity that used the Lord\u2019s name in vain .<\/p>\n<p>All sorts of euphemisms arose at this <strong>time<\/strong>, such as egad and gadzooks \u2013 a disguised reference to &#8220;God\u2019s hooks&#8221;, or nails on the cross \u2013 while gadsbudlikins and odsbobs mangled the words &#8220;God\u2019s body&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> of all, this <strong>word<\/strong> was first recorded in place names and surnames of the 13th century, when it was a perfectly straightforward descriptor of what took place there.<\/p>\n<p>So, when it comes to issues such as allowing <strong>women<\/strong> to choose what to do with their bodies, or even teaching <strong>sex<\/strong> ed in schools, there&#8217;s an automatic push against it because &#8220;that&#8217;s not how God wanted it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s the biggest <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> to admit you wish you\u2019d never had <strong>children<\/strong>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never really told my husband how I truly feel. He has such a natural affinity for <strong>children<\/strong>, and thank God he does. Because, as well as being a pioneering logician, Russell was an uncompromising freethinker\u2014and an early advocate of free love.<\/p>\n<p>In a debate broadcast by the BBC in 1948 Russell came up against <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_Copleston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederick Copleston<\/a>, a Jesuit priest, in one of the listening public\u2019s earliest exposures to the philosophical arguments against God. Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YouTube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a>, you can listen to the stand-off again. Copleston, palpably irritated and wearied by his opponent\u2019s obstinance, pleads: &#8220;We seem to have reached an impasse.&#8221; &#8220;We can press the point a little I think,&#8221; Russell cheekily replies.<\/p>\n<p>In the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> Kingdom and other parts of Edo State, it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> for a <strong>woman<\/strong> who is traditionally married to a man, to engage in extra-marital affairs with other <strong>men<\/strong>. It is regarded as a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, with grave consequences. When such occurs and is not confessed, it is believed that it could result in dire consequences for the husband and <strong>children<\/strong> of the adulterous <strong>woman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of girls and young <strong>women<\/strong> who spoke on the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> said they would rather decline a marriage offer than take the oath.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Magazine on the issue, Mr. Kenneth Iguisi, a traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> man, said it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, a serious and dangerous thing for a <strong>woman<\/strong> married to a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> man to have affairs with other <strong>men<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;In the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> Kingdom, it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> for a <strong>woman<\/strong> that is properly married to a man, especially in the traditional <strong>way<\/strong>, to engage in extramarital affairs.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, &#8220;There are things that strong traditionalists have in their body that protect them against such things. So, the effect will be on the <strong>children<\/strong>. When such deadly repercussions begin to occur, the <strong>woman<\/strong> has to confess and there are rituals and sacrifices that must be performed to cleanse the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>. Goats and some other things will be sacrificed to appease the ancestors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Iguisi is, however, of the opinion that the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is no longer revered as it was in the past, and so, it no longer deters modern-<strong>day<\/strong> <strong>women<\/strong> from marital infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From experience, I know that that kind of marriage is a trap. I am aware of a <strong>woman<\/strong> whose husband also abandoned her and travelled to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>. Over 12 years after, the man is yet to return for even one <strong>day<\/strong>. God forbid, I will never allow any tradition to enslave me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If I went ahead to swear, it will mean that I\u2019m doubting God and myself.<\/p>\n<p>However, many are of the opinion that the advent of Christianity appears to have mitigated the effect of the tradition, as <strong>women<\/strong> no longer see it as something to be respected or be in fear of it. They believe that modern religions have polluted traditions and have emboldened <strong>women<\/strong> to break traditions without pangs of guilt. According to them, <strong>women<\/strong> simply go into fasting and prayer to appease God, after engaging in extramarital affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The origin of such <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is rooted in the cultural, historical and religious myths circumventing menstruation.<\/p>\n<p>In Punjab, it was believed that mother Earth slept for a week every month which is then seen as the period days. In the Malabar region, mother earth was believed to rest during the hot season until she felt the first drop of a rain shower. Till today, in Kamakhya temple of Assam and parts of Orissa, the rituals of the menstruation of the goddesses are still celebrated with the arrival of monsoon during the Ambubachi festival. Across South <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a>, when a girl menstruates for the first <strong>time<\/strong>, it is celebrated in public.<\/p>\n<p>Hindus believe the spirit of the words encoded in this book as for them, these are god\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>To protect <strong>men<\/strong>, <strong>women<\/strong> are excluded, discriminated and yet <strong>men<\/strong> are seen as \u2018protectors\u2019 while in reality their strength is threatened with just a look of a menstruating <strong>women<\/strong>&#8211; as spoken by \u2018God\u2019 and \u2018<strong>men<\/strong>\u2019!<\/p>\n<p>A Life Of Stigma And Taboo<\/p>\n<p>It is a <strong>way<\/strong> to ensure that menstruation remains a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>; any challenge is thwarted and crushed to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>How gods unleash hell if a menstruating <strong>women<\/strong> enters their paradise.<\/p>\n<p>All these misconceptions and myths underpin not only <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> that flare but also hint towards a lack of awareness regarding menstrual hygiene, threatening the health of <strong>women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is a root cause of discrimination and the underdevelopment of <strong>women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because \u2018they\u2019 said; because that\u2019s what has been done since <strong>time<\/strong> immemorial, we must continue the practice&#8221;. All the menstrual <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> are reasoned under the garb of \u2018they\u2019 said. \u2018They\u2019 are all those who have unquestionably participated in propagating such myths and discrimination. \u2018They\u2019 are us. If these \u2018they said\u2019 practices are continued without challenge, we will be the \u2018they\u2019 for our upcoming generation. It\u2019s a vicious cycle,- the one that never ends; the one that <strong>lives<\/strong> with facades and masks; the one that helps patriarchy thrive with skewed rationales in the words of the \u2018they\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>All these misconceptions and myths underpin not only <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> that flare but also hint towards a lack of awareness regarding menstrual hygiene, threatening the health of <strong>women<\/strong>. The government\u2019s inaction in tackling this serious issue is just another instance of institutionalized injustice. This <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is a root cause of discrimination and the underdevelopment of <strong>women<\/strong>. It impacts the mental health of <strong>women<\/strong> who are posed with these conflicts- on one side they have their own ideology, on the other side the society imposes their perception.<\/p>\n<p>We are a product of that generation where the controversy around <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sabarimala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sabarimala<\/a> temple is still fought. Yet another example of institutionalized oppression. Menstruation is not a social construct, it is a biological\/natural phenomenon. But, the myths and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> are a social construct; they are not natural. It\u2019s wise to acknowledge the difference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is what God wanted and she is currently transitioning. I was not confused or surprised, because from the <strong>day<\/strong> she was born I could see her as a boy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The segment and Selim\u2019s frank admission in a country where gender issues remain <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> have won praise on social media, with many applauding Selim for his position and his decision to speak about it on Egyptian television.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing slavery on an online channel, he denied that slavery was genocide &#8220;otherwise there wouldn&#8217;t be so many damn blacks in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Africa<\/a> or in Britain, would there?&#8221; God knows what the 75-<strong>year<\/strong>-old was thinking but he was immediately dumped by the universities of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cambridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cambridge<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canterbury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canterbury<\/a> and sacked from the Mary Rose Trust. He can probably kiss goodbye to any future BBC or ITV jobs. Starkey, the author of 20 books and presenter of a dozen TV series, has given us millions of erudite words, apparently without learning that it can take only one little world to bring you crashing down. I bet he&#8217;s thinking it today: damn, damn, damn.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-right\"><p>The Luminaries continues to push back the frontiers of an old TV <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>. Until recently, miscarriages were merely hinted at in dramas. Now, first in Fleabag and again in The Luminaries, they are dealt with graphically. As directors push the bounds, expect worse to come. I wonder how many <strong>women<\/strong>, carrying their own terrible memories, would prefer not to be reminded.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Synagogues, churches, and mosques all glorify a single deity, but our differences and triumphalist convictions continually and ironically aim to quarter up God.<\/p>\n<p>This important Islamic festival is celebrated by Muslims globally to commemorate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abraham<\/a>\u2019s sacrifice of his son and God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n<p>It also marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mecca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mecca<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saudi_Arabia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, where religious rituals are said to draw Muslims closer to God in remembrance and prayer.<\/p>\n<p>She gives a dirty, rattling laugh. \u2018Surgery! As if there even is surgery! It\u2019s bloody ridiculous \u2014 and all for something that is perfectly normal.
