color: #000000; border-color: #ffffff;\">She&nbsp;<\/span>says that when she revealed her devastating diagnosis, elder members of her black Christian community told her to shun the advice of doctors and \u2018leave it to God, he will heal you.<\/p>\n<p>The gymnastics teacher, from Hampton, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London<\/a>, wants <strong>people<\/strong> to understand the dangers associated with not being able to talk about <strong>cancer<\/strong>, and how outdated <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> are putting <strong>lives<\/strong> at risk.<br \/>\nShe says ethnic minorities face additional challenges when going through <strong>cancer<\/strong> treatment because of cultural <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I am a Christian, however, I believe that my relationship with God is personal and between myself and God,\u2019 explains Angel. \u2018Whatever I choose to do everyone else will have to understand.<\/p>\n<p>She adds that the black Christian community needs to be more accepting and mindful of the mental impact a <strong>cancer<\/strong> diagnosis can have.<\/p>\n<p>Chiu told <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC<\/a> News on Monday that the colliding dynamics of her family\u2019s Chinese cultural background and her conservative Christian upbringing proved to be a &#8220;double whammy&#8221; in processing the alleged assault, in which she says the film mogul attacked her during the 1998 Venice Film Festival in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then also being Christian, you are also conventional on your beliefs about sexuality and so on, so forth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/amaliafoka.com\/breaking-the-silence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/christian-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\">Chiu, who did not reveal any details surrounding the alleged abuse to her loved ones for decades, explained she had grown up outside <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London<\/a> in a predominantly white area and joined a Chinese Christian youth <strong>group<\/strong> in her teen years.<\/p>\n<p>It stood in stark contrast to the film industry, where sexual assault was rampant and sex wasn\u2019t a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> topic, she said.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s levels of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, if you&#8217;re not even talking about sex between married <strong>people<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, Asian Christian <strong>churches<\/strong> in the West serve not only as places of worship, but also crucial social networks for immigrants who feel racially marginalized or may have difficulty finding a welcoming community in &#8220;a white-dominant country,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, as Chiu says, &#8220;climbing through those layers of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> as a young person seems insurmountable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they could center the idea that sin includes patriarchy and for them to embrace the ideas of feminism into their Christian theology, I think we would be living in a different world,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>In the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> Kingdom and <strong>other parts<\/strong> of Edo State, it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> for a <strong>woman<\/strong> who is traditionally married to a <strong>man<\/strong>, to engage in extra-marital affairs with other men.<\/p>\n<p>It is regarded as a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, with grave consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of girls and young <strong>women<\/strong> who spoke on the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> said they would rather decline a <strong>marriage<\/strong> offer than take the oath.<\/p>\n<p>I am a Christian, if he doesn\u2019t trust me enough, let it be.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Magazine on the issue, Mr. Kenneth Iguisi, a traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> <strong>man<\/strong>, said it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, a serious and dangerous thing for a <strong>woman<\/strong> married to a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> <strong>man<\/strong> to have affairs with other men.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;In the entire <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benin<\/a> Kingdom, it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> for a <strong>woman<\/strong> that is properly married to a <strong>man<\/strong>, especially in the traditional way, to engage in extramarital affairs.<\/p>\n<p>When such deadly repercussions begin to occur, the <strong>woman<\/strong> has to confess and there are rituals and sacrifices that must be performed to cleanse the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Iguisi is, however, of the opinion that the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is no longer revered as it was in the past, and so, it no longer deters modern-day <strong>women<\/strong> from marital infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>today<\/strong>, it is believed that because of Christianity, <strong>women<\/strong> no longer have fear for such tradition anymore.<\/p>\n<p>No, I was not, because the family I got married to are Christians and I did traditional and court marriages.<\/p>\n<p>As a Christian, no, I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>He told our correspondent the Christians\u2019 view of adultery quite differs from the view held by traditionalists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Adultery itself is a sin, whether you are a Christian or not, it\u2019s a sin.<\/p>\n<p>Christianity abhors adultery.<\/p>\n<p>But the way Christianity sees it is different from the way traditionalists handle it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-left\"><p>That is true because, I\u2019ve seen something like that in my village, even before I became Christian.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, many are of the opinion that the advent of Christianity appears to have mitigated the effect of the tradition, as <strong>women<\/strong> no longer see it as something to be respected or be in fear of it.<\/p>\n<p>The situation of the Iraqi LGBTQ community is tenuous, and violence is a very real possibility and can erupt at any time against <strong>communities<\/strong> that are deemed fringe or <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LGBT rights are non-existent in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iraq<\/a>, where homosexuality, transgenderism, and cross dressing are highly <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> among Muslims and minority Christians alike.<\/p>\n<p>The raising of the flag was an &#8220;attack on all People of the Book, not just Muslims&#8221;, he added, referring to Christians and Jews.<\/p>\n<p>This demonstrates how the situation of the Iraqi LGBTQ community is tenuous, and violence is a very real possibility and can erupt at any time against <strong>communities<\/strong> that are deemed fringe or <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Immersion in cleansing baths is part of Orthodox Jewish menstruation rituals , while some Christian church fathers defend the exclusion of <strong>women<\/strong> from ministry reasoned on the premise of uncleanness .<\/p>\n<p>Many regard menstruation as the &#8220;ultimate <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>&#8221; Well, St Genesius was a comedic performer, known for his farcical interpretations of Christian practices.<\/p>\n<p>One day, while making fun of the ritual of baptism while on stage \u2013 in front of Roman Emperor <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocletian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diocletian<\/a>, no less \u2013 Genesius experienced a \u2018revelation\u2019 and thereafter converted to Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for him, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocletian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diocletian<\/a> just happened to be a persecutor of Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>Far from finding himself in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diocletian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diocletian<\/a>\u2019s good books, once <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vitus<\/a> \u2018came out\u2019 as a Christian he was boiled like an egg in a repository of boiling water.<\/p>\n<p>What about <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>? Well, whatever you do, don\u2019t whistle in the theatre! At one time, many sailors would be employed in the theatre, due to their rope \u2013 rigging \u2013 skills and expertise with knots.<\/p>\n<p>Who said that health and safety regulations are a plague of the modern world? It seems that theatre-land had it all worked out many moons ago! Another <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is giving flowers before a performance \u2013 this is thought to be tempting fate.<\/p>\n<p>Transgender <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>: Don\u2019t question &#8230; or else<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a fun <strong>fact<\/strong>: the word &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>&#8221; came to the English language from natives on what is now the nation of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tonga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tonga<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When he asked why, they replied these things were &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>,&#8221; which meant &#8220;consecrated, inviolable, forbidden, unclean or cursed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now in English parlance <strong>today<\/strong>, we tend to use the word &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>&#8221; as a figure of speech or hyperbole.<\/p>\n<p>A recent article in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada<\/a>\u2019s National Post identified something it called the &#8220;new <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.&#8221; It\u2019s off-limits to even talk about the increasing number of <strong>people<\/strong> who, having undergone gender-reassignment surgery, now not only regret their decision, they want to reverse the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Why then are these disaster stories so rarely heard? Because they are <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Get The Christian Post newsletter in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>The very same article told readers about allegations that Bath Spa University in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">England<\/a> turned down &#8220;an application for research on gender reassignment reversal&#8221; because the project was deemed \u2018potentially politically incorrect. \u2019&#8221; Or perhaps a more accurate word would be the one chosen by the National Post: &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The author deserves our pity, but the decision to run the article without even questioning what on earth is going on, is the very definition of something being &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.&#8221; Questioning the sacredness and inviolability of the desire to transition invites the digital equivalent of the wrath of the gods that ancient Polynesian feared for violating <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Singal and the Atlantic violated the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, and they were digitally stoned for it.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>fact<\/strong>, this cultural <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> is so strong, it can cost parents custody of their children.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a Christian family in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ohio<\/a> lost custody of their 17-year-old son because he wanted to begin hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>This is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> in action.<\/p>\n<p>Western civilization, which has been predominantly Christian, has a history of menstrual <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some Christian denominations, including many authorities of the Eastern Orthodox Church and some parts of the Oriental Orthodox Church advise <strong>women<\/strong> not to receive communion during their menstrual period.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-right\"><p>In some portions of South Asia, there is a menstrual <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, with it frequently being considered impure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the whole uproar over <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sabarimala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sabarimala<\/a>, the issue being tom-tommed by pseudo liberals is Women\u2019s rights \u2013 gender equality, and especially the whole <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> surrounding menstruation \u2013 and all of it is nothing but a distortion, and concoction, where the narrative is being twisted to suit the agenda of certain vested interests.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/amaliafoka.com\/breaking-the-silence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/christian-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>Today hardly anybody performs this ceremony for their daughters, because we were taught by those who came from outside that it is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, and shameful.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an Islamic issue alone, though there are clear differences in the levels of threats and intimidation against <strong>people<\/strong> who leave Christianity in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I know of Christians who have left their <strong>faith<\/strong> and converted to Islam who talk of pressures from their families, and where some have had their immediate family stop all communication, sometimes for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the <strong>fact<\/strong> that her courage has shown many <strong>people<\/strong> that they can take charge of their <strong>life<\/strong> and their destinies, Rahaf has highlighted something that is still <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> to raise in the Middle East \u2013 that <strong>people<\/strong> can choose to leave <strong>faith<\/strong> behind and make active choices about what they do and do not believe in.<\/p>\n<p>I welcomed the highest-level delegation of U.S. evangelical Christian leaders ever to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saudi_Arabia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For me, it is naturally about fulfilling my mandate as head of an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to presenting the unadulterated and tolerant principles of Islam, and extending bridges of dialogue and cooperation with all of Allah&#8217;s children\u2014be they Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, or adherents of any other community.<\/p>\n<p>That is why I proposed an interfaith peace convoy to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerusalem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerusalem<\/a>, comprised of the great men and <strong>women<\/strong> of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, representing our common Abrahamic heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Aramoko-Ekiti, it is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> for anybody to parade the in Aramoko and neighbouring towns.&#8221;Christians arent immune to depression and suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Christians go through many battles and some of these can be the struggle with mental health issues\/illness, said Isis Wellman, a certified addictions and clinical mental health counsellor.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Wellman, who has 15 years experience in the field, said the subject is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> in every church denomination.<\/p>\n<p>Dealing with grief, chronic stress, financial issues, <strong>life<\/strong> transitions, divorce, bullying, physical\/ health ailments, chronic pain or a host of other <strong>life<\/strong> challenges can all have an impact on a Christians relationship with God, she added.<\/p>\n<p>As Christians we will have moments where our <strong>faith<\/strong> will be tested and because of this we might lose hope.<\/p>\n<p>The better equipped our church leaders and members are in recognising their <strong>feelings<\/strong>, being able to reach out for help, and offering support and guidance, the more our church members will feel comfortable in <strong>understanding<\/strong> that going through these battles are part of a journey and not the end of our Christian walk.<\/p>\n<p>She also hopes to see more Christians register for a mental health course offered by Bermuda Hospitals Board psychologists Aisha Basden and Cherita Raynor.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_School\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New School<\/a> website, there are four religiously-affiliated student groups at the university, which are the only Student Activity Finance Committee sponsored religious organizations on <strong>campus<\/strong>: Ecclesia Christian Ministry, The Jewish Culture Club, Encounter Christian Fellowship, and Remnant Christian Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>She said there is a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> against talking about religion and spirituality on <strong>campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> on talking about religion forces some students to choose between pride in their <strong>faith<\/strong> and the assumption of political or social beliefs imposed by the Lang community.<\/p>\n<p>One of the four religious groups on <strong>campus<\/strong> is the Ecclesia Christian Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>ECM is a traditional Christian student <strong>group<\/strong> that holds a weekly bible study for both undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I became a Christian in my undergraduate years through a <strong>campus<\/strong> ministry; It has made a world of difference in my <strong>life<\/strong> to have God and the fellowship encouraging me.<\/p>\n<p>Homosexuality is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> in the East African nation and persecution of sexual minorities is rife.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners say the laws have long promoted homophobia in the largely conservative Christian country &#8211; and are used daily to persecute and discriminate against sexual minorities.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan government, backed by powerful Christian groups, however is opposed to scrapping the ban on gay sex, have argued during court hearings last year that it will lead to same-sex <strong>marriage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Same-sex relationships are considered <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> and are a crime across most of the continent, with punishments ranging from imprisonment to death.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\"><p>&#8220;I am a literal believer in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesus<\/a>,&#8221; Washburn says, while recognizing that Christianity &#8220;got a lot of its practices from Judaism.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Christians celebrate a holy week, culminating in Easter Sunday\u2019s ritual remembering of their Savior\u2019s triumph over the grave.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the original Christians were <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesus<\/a>-believing Jews, who saw the Last Supper described in the New Testament as a Passover seder.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Easter assures the individual Christian <strong>life<\/strong> eternal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would never proselytize,&#8221; Stephen says, &#8220;but I do talk about my Christian perspective and share how I feel.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these marriages are between a Christian and a religiously unaffiliated spouse, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Then she converted to Judaism, but retains deep ties to her Christian clan.<\/p>\n<p>When his <strong>marriage<\/strong> ended in divorce in 2009, his Christian <strong>faith<\/strong> was a rock.<\/p>\n<p>After they married, she kept her menorahs on the main floor, Stephen quips, while she made &#8220;the Christian&#8221; carry his crosses to the basement wine cellar.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, though, April could never be a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s just live and let live.&#8221;In the 1800s, a church, go to small <strong>group<\/strong>, or have quiet time with the Bible in one hand and a stimulant in the other.<\/p>\n<p>How should a Christian respond to <strong>drugs<\/strong> like health looks like; they will be able to incorporate that medical information into an <strong>understanding<\/strong> of who they are and what they are made for.<\/p>\n<p>We need to have a discussion as a Christian community to get greater clarity on these issues.<\/p>\n<p>Decisions like these have to be done in <strong>communities<\/strong> that value searching the Scriptures to understand what Christlikeness looks like, to discover the principles that should govern what a faithful Christian <strong>life<\/strong> looks like\u2014going it alone is not a good idea.<\/p>\n<p><span
