or menstrual exile occurs throughout Nepal."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"intro-text\">\n<p>Last <strong>month<\/strong>, Parbati Buda Rawat, a 21-<strong>year<\/strong>-old woman, was found dead in a remote district of far-west <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> after being removed from the <strong>family<\/strong> <strong>home<\/strong> to a shed while menstruating in which she suffocated after lighting a fire to keep warm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap square\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000; border-color: #ffffff;\">Chhaupadi\u00a0<\/span>is a long withstanding <strong>tradition<\/strong> observed in some <strong>parts<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, whereby a menstruating woman is required to stay in a small hut or shed, external to the <strong>family<\/strong> <strong>home<\/strong>, for the duration of her menses.<\/p>\n<p>Chhaupadi or menstrual hut used by <strong>women<\/strong> during menstruation in Surkhet District, far West <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chhaupadi or menstrual exile occurs throughout <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not every Nepali woman will observe menstrual exile and it is least prevalent in Central and Eastern districts \u2013 including the capital of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kathmandu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathmandu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research found 77 per cent of adolescent <strong>girls<\/strong> in Achham, far West <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, practiced <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> each <strong>month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the Government of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> outlawed <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Government<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> is even offering rewards and incentives for those who destroy <strong>huts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These <strong>actions<\/strong> may mark a significant turning point for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, policing, monitoring and documenting the prevalence of <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> is complicated and difficult in a <strong>country<\/strong> with sparse resources like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/amaliafoka.com\/breaking-the-silence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/nepal-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several Nepali organisations and advocacy groups have also raised concern over the effectiveness of tearing down menstrual <strong>huts<\/strong> or imposing fines on pro-<strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> individuals and groups when the stigmatising beliefs remain unchallenged.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the middle of winter now in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, one of the most dangerous times of the <strong>year<\/strong> for a woman to <strong>practice<\/strong> <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> will count LGBTQ <strong>people<\/strong> for the first time in its next census, a move that campaigners on Monday said could <strong>help<\/strong> sexual minorities gain better access to education and health-care services.<\/p>\n<p>Along with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pakistan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangladesh<\/a> also legally recognize transgender <strong>people<\/strong>, which often include intersex <strong>people<\/strong> and eunuchs, as a third gender.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-left\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a> have conducted national surveys with the third gender option.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>&#8216;s census \u2013 scheduled for June 2021 \u2013 could <strong>help<\/strong> end stigma and discrimination that LGBTQ <strong>people<\/strong> face in accessing support and welfare programs, said Dhundi Raj Lamichhane, an official at the Central Bureau of Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>But gay rights activists voiced concern over the Nepalese <strong>government<\/strong>&#8216;s plan to combine sexual orientation with gender identity in the survey.<\/p>\n<p>Despite legislative changes, homosexuality remains <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboo<\/span><\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, where an estimated 900,000 LGBTQ <strong>people<\/strong> still face harassment and discrimination, campaigners say.<\/p>\n<p>Sarita, head of the LGBTQ charity Mitini <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She said while she worried that the results may not reflect the real number of LGBTQ Nepalis due to confusion, identification problems, or stigma, she and other activists were planning to raise awareness in the run-up to the census.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/amaliafoka.com\/breaking-the-silence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Nepal-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 2014, When the Modi <strong>government<\/strong> came to power, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a>\u2019s foreign relations with its neighbors deteriorated be it <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangladesh<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bhutan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhutan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pakistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pakistan<\/a>, or other nations like USA or UAE.<\/p>\n<p>Ally becoming enemy: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> which is undergoing recent territory conflicts with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a> in Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura has asked <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a> for <strong>help<\/strong> as a part of its strategic Diplomacy which <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a> declined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> has signaled strong sovereignty by including these regions in its recent political map.<\/p>\n<p>It has also changed Citizenship Rule for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a> where an Indian marrying a Nepali woman will now be required to wait up to 7 years to be Nepali citizen.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, <strong>girls<\/strong> are banished to \u00ab<strong>period<\/strong> <strong>huts<\/strong>\u00bb during their cycle because they are considered polluted, even toxic.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>practice<\/strong> has had deadly consequences: In 2017, a teenager in western <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> was bitten and killed by a poisonous snake.<\/p>\n<p>KATHMANDU, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> \u2014 When Amba Bohara\u2019s <strong>period<\/strong> came this week, she followed a familiar routine in western <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-right\"><p>Though <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> criminalized the <strong>practice<\/strong> last <strong>year<\/strong>, many villages in the <strong>country<\/strong> continue to follow the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboo<\/span><\/strong>, known as <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> in Nepali.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A 35-<strong>year<\/strong>-old Nepali woman and her two sons have died reportedly due to suffocation after they spent a night in a windowless hut as part of a banned <strong>practice<\/strong> that considers <strong>women<\/strong> untouchable during menstruation, according to a media report.<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>&#8216;s Bajura district when Amba Bohora, who was on the fourth day of her <strong>period<\/strong>, on Tuesday night had dinner with her two sons aged 9 and 12 and later went to the hut to sleep with a fire near to keep the hut warm, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kathmandu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathmandu<\/a> Post reported.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the <strong>tradition<\/strong> many communities in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> consider menstruating <strong>women<\/strong> impure and force female of menstruation age to stay in sheds away from the <strong>family<\/strong> <strong>home<\/strong> once a <strong>month<\/strong> despite the <strong>practice<\/strong> being banned.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>&#8216;s Supreme Court banned such practices which was followed by a new <strong>law<\/strong> in 2017 to criminalise it.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, a 23-<strong>year<\/strong>-old woman in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> was found dead at an isolated hut where she was left alone as part of the banned <strong>practice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, Tradition Is Killing Women<\/p>\n<p>KATHMANDU, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2014Dhana Bista was dreading leaving <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kathmandu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathmandu<\/a> for her village in the far-western region of the Himalayan <strong>country<\/strong> to visit her <strong>family<\/strong> last October.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s predominantly agrarian communities, <strong>women<\/strong> are banished from their homes every <strong>month<\/strong> when they get their periods.<\/p>\n<p>This ancient Hindu <strong>practice<\/strong> is called <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong>, and it has been in place for hundreds of years in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, as well as in <strong>parts<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangladesh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abChhaupadi is form of seclusion connected to Hindus\u2019 deep religious beliefs and feelings about ritual purity and impurity,\u00bb explained Mary Cameron, a professor of anthropology at Florida Atlantic University who has worked extensively in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIn far-west <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> , the <strong>practice<\/strong> is tied to deities\u2014the belief that any kind of impurity will make deities angry and may cause misfortune to a community,\u00bb Cameron said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s Supreme Court banned <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> in 2005, calling it a human rights violation, but it has continued to flourish not only in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s mid- and far-western regions but in varying forms across the <strong>country<\/strong>, where fears of consequences for breaking menstrual <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> keep a tight grip.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s <strong>government<\/strong> was forced into action after a spate of highly publicized deaths of <strong>women<\/strong> practicing <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s parliament criminalized <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> in August 2017, in a <strong>law<\/strong> that was passed unanimously.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00abHow can a <strong>law<\/strong> change a belief that is so ingrained in <strong>people<\/strong>\u2019s mindsets?\u00bb asked Lachhindra Maharjan, the head of advocacy at Save the Children <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> is considered a leader in South Asia in passing laws to protect vulnerable groups\u2014for example, it\u2019s been a leader in protecting LGBT rights\u2014but laws and bills rarely get implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Anju Dhungana from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2019s Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Welfare agrees.<\/p>\n<p>Radha Paudel is a menstrual rights activist and the founder of Actions Works <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, a nonprofit organization focused on <strong>women<\/strong>\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>She says the <strong>law<\/strong> is failing <strong>women<\/strong> not only because it\u2019s not being implemented\u2014like myriad other laws and policies in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>\u2014but also because it fails to define the concept of <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> properly.<\/p>\n<p>She says the <strong>law<\/strong> neglects to take into the account the nuances of <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong> across different <strong>parts<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> and fails to address all the restrictions that come with the <strong>practice<\/strong>, which include a <strong>ban<\/strong> on bathing and restrictions on <strong>women<\/strong>\u2019s diets.<\/p>\n<p>KATHMANDU, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> \u2014 Parbati Bogati knew what to do when her <strong>period<\/strong> came.<\/p>\n<p>Bogati, 21, sequestered herself in an abandoned house, in keeping with a centuries-old <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboo<\/span><\/strong> that declares menstruating <strong>women<\/strong> impure, officials from her area in rural western <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboo<\/span><\/strong>, which has its roots in Hinduism, is called <strong>chhaupadi<\/strong>, from the Nepali words meaning someone who bears an impurity.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIn <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>, many <strong>people<\/strong> believe that <strong>girls<\/strong> are impure when we are menstruating. We are often treated as untouchable during our periods.\u00bb \u00abSome of us have been banished from our <strong>home<\/strong> and need to sleep outside in a cow shed or a mud hut. This process is called chhapaudi.\u00bb \u00abWe are forbidden from eating meat, milk products, and fruits or vegetables because it is believed that we will contaminate the source of those foods.\u00bb \u00abWe are not allowed to go in the kitchen, cook, or touch utensils and jars containing food.\u00bb \u00abWe are not even allowed to look at the faces of our father, brother, and other male member in the <strong>family<\/strong>.\u00bb \u00abIf we do, some believe it brings illness and perhaps death upon them.\u00bb \u00abWe live in Surkhet, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nepal<\/a>. We range in age from 12 to 18.\u00bb \u00abThese are some of our menstruation stories.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00abThe first time I had my <strong>period<\/strong>, my grandmother told me to go to the river and bathe. It was cold, and the water was colder. I didn\u2019t want to bathe, but I had to. When I returned <strong>home<\/strong>, my grandmother told me to go into a dark room. I was not allowed to leave the room or touch anyone for 10 days. I was also forbidden from seeing the sun.\u00bb \u00abI usually get lots of love from my <strong>family<\/strong>. But when I have my <strong>period<\/strong>, I am treated differently. I feel discriminated against and humiliated.\u00bb \u00abSix two times?\u00bb \u00ab12.\u00bb \u00abWhen I started my <strong>period<\/strong>, my mom allowed me to go to school, but I had to hide from my brother because my <strong>family<\/strong> believed if I saw his face, his life would be shortened.\u00bb \u00abDuring my first <strong>period<\/strong>, I stayed in my sister\u2019s <strong>home<\/strong>, but I could only be there in the nighttime. In the daytime, I stayed in a forest nearby.\u00bb \u00abWhen I got my first <strong>period<\/strong>, I was afraid because my mom said I had to stay in the shed for 12 days. It was very cold, and the nights were long. I was also not allowed to go to school.
