color: #000000; border-color: #ffffff;\">There&nbsp;<\/span>has been a public backlash to the <strong>plastic<\/strong> waste crisis in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> after several animals were found dead with inordinate amounts of <strong>plastic<\/strong> stuck in their digestive tracts, including land and sea mammals like deer and dugongs, as The Hill reported.<\/p>\n<p>The epidemic of man-made litter killing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>&#8216;s wildlife led to some soul-searching from <strong>government<\/strong> and business <strong>leaders<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> was ranked sixth among the world&#8217;s top countries that dumps waste into the sea,&#8221; said Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-Archa to <strong>reporters<\/strong> on New Year&#8217;s Day after handing out reusable <strong>bags<\/strong> to the public, as Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>government<\/strong> has launched a public awareness <strong>campaign<\/strong> to make <strong>plastic<\/strong> <strong>bags<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It has run television ads that pixelate <strong>plastic<\/strong> <strong>bags<\/strong> with other cultural <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> like nudity, smoking cigarettes, alcohol <strong>use<\/strong> and violent crime, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France<\/a> 24 reported.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> reduced the <strong>use<\/strong> of <strong>plastic<\/strong> <strong>bags<\/strong> by 2 billion, or about 5,765 tons last <strong>year<\/strong>, in its <strong>campaign<\/strong> to get consumers to refuse <strong>plastic<\/strong> <strong>bags<\/strong> from stores, as Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>Those areas make up about 40 percent of <strong>plastic<\/strong> bag <strong>use<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> seeks to make <strong>plastic<\/strong> <strong>use<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, environmental activists see much larger action needed to solve the <strong>plastic<\/strong> crisis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/amaliafoka.com\/breaking-the-silence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Thailand-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should stop the &#8216;throw-away&#8217; culture in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>,&#8221; said Pichmol Rugrod, of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenpeace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greenpeace<\/a>, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">France<\/a> 24 reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s King Maha <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vajiralongkorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vajiralongkorn<\/a> also known as Rama X has isolated himself in a luxury hotel in the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a harem of 20 women amid the new coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Although criticism of the <strong>monarchy<\/strong> is <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> in the <strong>country<\/strong>, the public anger boomed with a &#8220;Why do we need a king?&#8221; <strong>hashtag<\/strong> which appeared 1.2 million <strong>times<\/strong> on Twitter within 24 hours after an <strong>activist<\/strong> stated that the king was traveling on holiday in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a> while COVID-19 was spreading across <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Activist Somsak Jeamteerasakul who is a vocal critic of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s <strong>monarchy<\/strong> shared a series of posts that showed how <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vajiralongkorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vajiralongkorn<\/a> was traveling from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Switzerland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Switzerland<\/a> to various places in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a> since early March.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> announced on Saturday 109 new cases in the <strong>country<\/strong>, bringing the total number of infections to 1,245.<\/p>\n<p>When they return home during the Songkran break the coronavirus situation in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> could worsen, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The first cluster infection detected in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-left\"><p>Dr Thiravat said the number of cases in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> was &#8220;on the rise&#8221;, with more more still to come.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are 70 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>, with the latest being the cluster infection.<\/p>\n<p>The department says it is also trying to prevent <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> entering the third phase of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>In Thai, it is said that they are &#8220;dismantling the precedent <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>,&#8221; protest, which with its familiar phrase, &#8220;You know who&#8221; , fits perfectly well with the political climate in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What is happening in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> is worth watching not only as a local upheaval, but as a sign of pandemic-era global political unrest.<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK &#8211; Over two days of video <strong>calls<\/strong> earlier this month, about a dozen students from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s Kasetsart and Mahanakorn universities debated whether to break a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> that could land them in jail: openly challenging the <strong>country<\/strong>\u2019s powerful <strong>monarchy<\/strong>, according to two <strong>people<\/strong> on the <strong>calls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Anon Nampa, one of the <strong>leaders<\/strong> of recent anti-<strong>government<\/strong> <strong>protests<\/strong> speaks during a demonstration demanding the resignation of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>&#8216;s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chiang_Mai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chiang Mai<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>, August 9, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Anon nor any of the protesters have been charged with <strong>breaking<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s \u2018lese majeste\u2019 <strong>law<\/strong>, which punishes criticism of the <strong>monarchy<\/strong> by up to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Anon\u2019s open call for reform underscored the scale and speed of change in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> as some members of a new generation take on an establishment tied to the close relationship between the palace and the army.<\/p>\n<p>The latest series of <strong>protests<\/strong> have grown from a handful of peaceful, online-organized flash mobs, mostly on university campuses, to dozens of street demonstrations across <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> and millions of <strong>people<\/strong> following hashtags online such as #FreeYouth.<\/p>\n<p>Even though King <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vajiralongkorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vajiralongkorn<\/a> spends much of his time in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a>, his image is pervasive in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-right\"><p>The military strongly supports the palace\u2019s position as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s highest moral authority, with its head taking an unprecedented public oath last <strong>year<\/strong> to only support a <strong>government<\/strong> that backs the <strong>monarchy<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Our main ideology is to promote democracy,&#8221; said Jutatip Sirikhan, 21, president of the Student Union of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>, which has helped organise the <strong>protests<\/strong> and has not criticised the palace.<\/p>\n<p>Then the new coronavirus halted the <strong>protests<\/strong> as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> locked down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> has seen repeated cycles of military intervention: there have been 13 successful coups since the end of absolute royal rule in 1932.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But if they let it slide, there\u2019s a risk the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> will crumble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The three have become leading voices in the ongoing student-led <strong>protests<\/strong> calling for reform of the <strong>monarchy<\/strong>, a move seen as <strong>breaking<\/strong> deeply entrenched <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">taboos<\/span><\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The role of the <strong>monarchy<\/strong> \u2013 a <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> topic in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> \u2013 was first raised at a rally early this month by Anon Nampa, a human rights lawyer and pro-democracy <strong>activist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At an anti-<strong>government<\/strong> demonstration dubbed &#8220;Harry Potter versus You-Know-Who or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named&#8221;, held at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangkok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bangkok<\/a>\u2019s Democracy Monument on August 3, the <strong>activist<\/strong> delivered an almost unprecedented public speech on the role of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s <strong>monarchy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We dream of a <strong>monarchy<\/strong> that coexists with democracy,&#8221; Anon said to cheers from a crowd of more than 10,000 <strong>people<\/strong> at Democracy Monument last Sunday, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s biggest protest in years.<\/p>\n<p>While Anon was the first person to publicly break the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>taboo<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul is responsible for driving the <strong>monarchy<\/strong> debate forward.<\/p>\n<p>In her closing statement at a rally last week, Panusaya called for change in the role of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a>\u2019s royal institution.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-<strong>year<\/strong>-old is spokesperson for the Student Union of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thailand<\/a> and is studying at Thammasat\u2019s Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology.<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK &#8211;
