Coming to terms<\/strong> with the legacy<\/strong> of socialism<\/strong> in Italy<\/a> will hopefully help the Italian left address its own identity<\/strong> issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

No <\/span>historical party<\/strong> has retreated more permanently from Italy<\/a>\u2019s collective mind than the unfortunate Socialist Party .<\/p>\n

This can be due to the fact that its last leadership<\/strong>, under the control of the mercurial and forceful leadership<\/strong> of its secretary Bettino Craxi<\/a>, was seen as responsible for some of the worst excesses of the political system in Italy<\/a>.
\nWhat did not help Craxi, a former prime minister, was that he was also scapegoated more than any other politician by great sections of the public, opposition and the media<\/strong> as exemplified by his television trial, which led to his subsequent dramatic escape from Italy<\/a> to Tunisia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, the unfortunate last acts of a party<\/strong> leadership<\/strong> cannot tarnish the memory of one of Italy<\/a>\u2019s most influential and successful movements, that brought great levels of material benefit to large sections of the population.<\/p>\n

After the war, the PSI once again provided a decisive contribution toward drafting Italy<\/a>\u2019s current constitution and turning it into a Republic during the 1946 referendum.<\/p>\n

At the time<\/strong> the PSI went against the European mainstream by siding openly with Italy<\/a>\u2019s Communist Party and the Soviet Union<\/a>, which led to another splinter by the pro-Atlantic Socialist Democratic party<\/strong> that insured that the Italian Left was not fully ostracised by European Social Democracy, and which was led by the charismatic Giuseppe Saragat<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The PSI managed to introduce long-standing administrative reforms such as the creation of Italy<\/a>\u2019s new regions, with greater territorial autonomies.<\/p>\n

\"\"Pietro Nenni<\/a> was subsequently instrumental in getting his \u2018frenemy\u2019 Saragat elected to be Italy<\/a>\u2019s first leftist president.<\/p>\n

In this phase, Italy<\/a>\u2019s first socialist president was elected, Giovanni Pertini, and Craxi led the only socialist-led government in Italian history.<\/p>\n

Under his leadership<\/strong>, Italy<\/a> experienced remarkable economic growth, which led to its GDP overtaking that of Britain and becoming the fourth largest economy in the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Moreover, during this period, Craxi managed to become one of the uncontested political figures in Italy<\/a>, punching above its weight despite his party<\/strong> hovering only at around 15% of the vote<\/strong> and being dwarfed by the Christian Democracy in terms<\/strong> of voters.<\/p>\n

However, the debate<\/strong> unfortunately failed to take note of the role that the PSI had taken in shaping modern Italy<\/a> and its many positive contributions and great personalities.<\/p>\n

However, they forget that there was once a political force that has always been on the right side of history in Italy<\/a>: the PSI.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, future progressives in Italy<\/a> will seek inspiration from the figures of Mateotti, the Rosselli brothers, Pertini, Saragat and Nenni and remember the experiences of the 1960s and 1980s as examples of what socialists could do when they get into power.

Italics Magazine was born less than two years<\/strong> ago in Rome<\/a>, from the idea of two friends who believed that Italy<\/a> was lacking a complete, in-depth, across-the-board source of information in English.<\/p>\n

Germany<\/a>, which has run a string of budget surpluses in recent years<\/strong>, has long resisted anything<\/strong> that smacks of its taxpayers being on the hook for the spending in less fiscally solid countries such as Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reluctance by Germany<\/a> and other countries during weeks of debate<\/strong> about sharing the burden of the economic recovery from the pandemic<\/strong> – which was no European country\u2019s fault – provoked angry responses in heavily indebted Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Economists have expressed concern that Italy<\/a> will come out of the crisis with even more debt and could face a financial crisis that would destabilize the wider region.<\/p>\n

ROME – He is 83 and has lost most of his former support, but Italy<\/a>\u2019s four-times prime minister Silvio Berlusconi<\/a> is manoeuvring to put his centre-right Forza Italia<\/a> party<\/strong> back into government and could make his move as early as September, sources say.<\/p>\n
